Product Review: Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect First Serum

Hi Everyone!

I’m back with another review on Skinfood‘s Black Sugar Perfect First Serum. I’ve heard many amazing things about Skinfood but I also know it’s a pricier skin care brand. You get what you pay for right? Well that’s what I wanted to find out, starting with this product. Though I haven’t had much luck with serums and first essences so far, I really wanted to give this one a shot.

What does it do: A multi-functioning serum with black sugar extract that exfoliates, hydrates and soothes skin.

How much: Php 1750 for 120ml full size, based on Zalora’s website. (link features -essential- version)

Instructions: Use as first step in skincare routine, similar to first essences.

Amount: 30ml deluxe sample size, 120 ml for full size

Skinfood’s Black Sugar Perfect First Serum has a light and delicately sweet smell. Though it is called a serum, it’s one of those “first step” skin care products and really is more similar to a first essence. It is of a watery consistency like most first essences and reminds me of a toner. Now, when you buy the full size it comes with its own set of cotton pads that have different textures on each side of the pad (one for absorption and one for exfoliating). I unfortunately was not able to try this so I just used a regular cotton pad.

The product absorbs well into the skin and really made my skin softer and smoother. It did moisturize my skin and made it look a bit brighter. However one problem I had was that, despite this being the “light” version for oily skin, I still think it was a little too strong for my skin.

On the first day of use, while I did not experience any itching or bumps on my skin, at the end of the day when I took off my makeup, I noticed red splotches on my face. Same on the next few days I kept using it. I stopped using the product for a week, to give my skin a break.

On my second try, red splotches appeared again but less than before. I tried again a few days later, and the splotches were not as bad. Ever since then, I would only use the product a few times a week, maybe 2-3 times – and I noticed that by doing this I was able avoid or minimize those red splotches.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great product! But just might be a little too strong for my skin 🙂

Rating:
Packaging – 5/5

Overall – 4.25/5

Verdict and will I purchase full size?

I think this product is great for those who have issues with dry skin, and even for those of a normal skin type. Combination to oily skin types might want to check their skin’s reaction to the product first. If you get any skin reactions like I did, try to use a smaller amount and try to use it only a few times a week.

Personally, while I do really like the product – I don’t really think that I will purchase full size at this point. The bottle is huge and I don’t use the product as much as I use my other skincare. I may however, consider buying another sample size hehe..
