3 Ways to Wear Bright Makeup for Summer

Hey Everyone,

Summer is finally here!

For me, this season has always been about bright colors. They’re fun to play around with, both in fashion choices and makeup.

With makeup, it’s usually best to pick one feature to focus on when using bright colors, to keep from looking overdone. In this post, I talk about 3 ways you can incorporate bright makeup into your look. If you’re looking to take a break from your no makeup look or be more adventurous with color, then this is for you!

EYES

There are so many ways you can use bright colors on your eyes, like eyeliner, eye shadow or mascara. Personally, I love using eye shadow for that pop of color on the eyes. In my collection, I always reach for ELF’s Little Black Beauty Book. I have mine in the “Cool” edition, which has a lot of beautiful bold colors. While you can always mix and match colors, I personally like to pick one focal color (like a bright blue or green) and use that on my lid. I use a lighter shade in my inner corner and a neutral (usually brown or gray) in my crease for some definition. Then I make sure to blend the color in well.

For those who like to mix and match bold colors, you still need to make sure your colors are blended together well. There should not be a distinct line between your colors; blending them in ensures a smooth transition between the different shades. Like a sort of gradient on your eyes.

CHEEKS

I never used to use bright blushes. I would stick to my soft pinks and warm peachy colors because I was afraid that a bright colored blush would make me look like a clown. But then I learned that the trick is just in the blending; you have to make sure that the color looks natural on your face. The placement of the color is also another key to good blush application and this usually depends on your face shape. (We found a nice link here on Good Housekeeping’s website on how to put blush based on your face shape).

The most pigmented blush I have is Milani’s Baked Blush in Bella Rosa. This is a beautiful matte reddish-rose color. It’s a warm shade and looks great with all skin tones. It’s best to use a light hand in applying this blush as it is very pigmented. Those who are very fair may want to be extra careful and use a very light hand during application to avoid looking overdone.

LIPS

Lips are the easiest feature to dress up in my opinion, and the easiest way to pull off wearing bright makeup. Swipe on a good lipstick and you’re instantly put together! I know some women are intimidated by bright colors, fearing that the color won’t suit them. But fear not, as there’s definitely a color out there for everyone! As a guide, those with warm/yellow undertones (green veins) would look best in warmer based colors, or colors with a more yellow or orange base. Those with cool or pink undertones (blue veins) look great in blue or purple based lipsticks. If your veins seem to be a mix, you’re probably neutral and will look great with all colors! Remember, this is just a guide. If you have pink undertones and want to wear a warm colored lipstick, by all means go for it!

My favorite bright lipstick is Maybelline’s Pink Alert by Colorsensational Lipstick in POW4. This is a beautiful bright coral pink with a semi-matte finish. It’s very long lasting and not too drying. It is a warm based color, so those with yellow undertones would look best in it. That said however, this is a color that can suit all skin tones.
